The New Smyrna Beach City Commission unanimously voted to close the former fishing pier at Buena Vista Park on North Causeway due to structural integrity concerns last year.

A replacement pier was approved back in April, with the help of a Florida Inland Navigation District grant, which covered fifty percent of the cost. As of today, September 30, the new fishing pier has reached eighty-seven percent completion.

"This pier will have lighting, benches, and fish cleaning stations," according to Maintenance Operations Director Faith Miller. "In addition, the handrails are made of a recycled composite deck material that should result in fewer accidental splinters for our residents and visitors."

Crews are continuously progressing toward one hundred percent completion in time for the re-opening of the pier slated for mid-to-late October.
