As part of a broader streetscape project planned along Washington Street in New Smyrna Beach, City commissioners unanimously approved the transition of Orange Street from Washington Street to Mary Avenue to a one-way northbound street starting June 21.

According to a release, City Commissioners approved the move on May 24, following positive feedback from local business owners and safety concerns raised by City Manager Khalid Resheidat.

"My recommendation is to move forward and make this happen now," said Resheidat. "Why wait until the end of the project to make the intersection safer?"

An electronic message board displaying "Orange St. to Mary Ave. will be one-way June 21" has been placed near the intersection of Orange & Washington Street to notify motorists of the upcoming change.

"I agree 100%," replied Vice Mayor & Zone 3 Commissioner Jason McGuirk. "It's seven accidents already this year. It's always been a problem. Hopefully, this goes a long way to solving that."
