New Smyrna Beach city offices will close on January 17 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and they will reopen Tuesday.

City staff will observe this federal holiday which celebrates Martin Luther King Jr, the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism during the Civil Rights Movement. He and his movement protested racial discrimination in federal and state law from 1954 to 1968.

While city offices will close, the waste collection schedule will remain the same. However, the city asks residents to place glass in the trash instead of the recycling bin from now on. The change is temporary because of fewer available outlets that will recycle glass.

Other than glass, the recycling program will continue to collect plastic numbered 1-5, metal cans, white paper, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and clean cardboard.
