To keep residents informed about the ongoing construction at the 5th Street Bridge, a public forum will be held, hosted by city staff and contractor representatives on Wednesday, October 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the James W. Hathaway Commission Chambers, located at 214 Sams Avenue in New Smyrna Beach.

According to a release, the ambitious project is scheduled for completion by September 2024, replacing the current single-span 40 ft. long bridge with a four-span 160 ft. long design, reducing long-term maintenance costs by eliminating the need for retaining walls at the abutments and improving water quality by increasing flow and decreasing siltation in the channel.

In addition to the expanded size, the revamped bridge will feature essential elements such as paved shoulders, guardrails, and drainage enhancements. These improvements will significantly mitigate erosion concerns and bolster water quality in the area by facilitating increased flow and reduced siltation in the channel, thus contributing to a healthier aquatic ecosystem.

Residents are encouraged to attend this public forum to gain insights into the progress of the 5th Street Bridge project, voice their concerns, and seek clarifications from the city staff and contractor representatives. This interactive session aims to foster transparency and collaboration throughout the construction process.
