New Smyrna Beach Police arrest a 32-year-old man following a fatal traffic crash on State Road 44.

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department arrested Michael M. Miles, 32, of New Smyrna Beach, following a traffic crash that resulted in the death of a juvenile male. 

According to police, the crash occurred just before 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2022, when Miles struck the rear end of a 2006 Honda Odyssey at the intersection of State Road 44 and the Interstate 95 On/Off ramps with his 2012 Nissan Titan. The Honda was stopped at the traffic light and was struck after Miles failed to slow down and stop. Both vehicles were heading eastbound at the time of the crash.

The driver and adult passenger of the Honda sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The juvenile passenger died in the crash.

Investigators with the Traffic Homicide Unit arrested Miles on the scene and transported him to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he is held with no bond. His charges include DUI, DUI manslaughter, DUI causing serious bodily injury to another person, DUI with damage to person and property, Refusal to submit to DUI testing, and Driving with a suspended license.
