Human remains found in New Smyrna Beach.

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at approximately 9:00 am, New Smyrna Beach Police officers received a report of human remains discovered in a wooded area in the 1700 block of North Dixie Freeway. An archeologist employed by the City of New Smyrna Beach discovered the bone while working in a documented historical site.

Upon arrival, patrol officers identified several bones, including a human skull. The New Smyrna Beach Detectives and Volusia County Medical Examiner Investigators searched the area and recovered approximately 30 bones.

The identity, race, and sex of the individual are currently unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. Detectives will be utilizing DNA testing to identify the person. They are also working towards identifying the cause of death.
