The Florida Department of Transportation and the city of New Smyrna Beach announced Wednesday construction has started on the State Road 44 Operations & Safety Improvements Project in New Smyrna Beach.

This project will require single-lane closures and detours eastbound and westbound on S.R. 44. The lane closures will happen during daytime and nighttime hours, with detours occurring during overnight hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Proper signage - like electronic message boards, will be put in place to alert motorists of closures.

According to a release, this project will supply safety and roadway improvements on State Road 44 from the Interstate 95 interchange to Florida Memorial Parkway. The improvements include adding an eastbound auxiliary lane for motorists coming from the southbound I-95 exit ramp, adding a westbound deceleration lane for the northbound I-95 on-ramp, and adding a second left-turn lane from the northbound I-95 exit ramp to westbound State Road 44.

Additional work includes roadway resurfacing, drainage modifications, new signage and pavement markings, traffic signal upgrades, median modifications, and lighting improvements.
