In September 2013, New Smyrna Beach officials sought out to receive a federal grant to resurface the primary runway and upgrade taxiways at the Municipal Airport, but it was unclear whether they received the funding or not.

In January of 2019, the city commission came up with a Municipal Airport master plan in which the airport would receive nearly $62 million in potential improvements in the next 20 years.

Yesterday, the commission approved another improvement to the airport. The Florida Department of Transportation granted the city $1.35 million to cover the initial construction costs for a 6,000 square foot Administration and Maintenance Facility.

Little was said about the grant or the master plan during the meeting, but they have approved for the facility to be built.
