Rob Salazar, Director of Leisure Services with the City of New Smyrna Beach, has provided an update on the temporary closure of the Jessie Stevenson Kovalenko Memorial Gym, also known as "City Cym," located at 1000 Live Oak St in New Smyrna Beach.

The city announced a temporary facility closure from June 26 to June 30, 2023, for repairs; However, due to the severe weather in New Smyrna Beach and Volusia County during the week of June 19, several roof leaks that made it into the interior of the building were discovered with some severe leaks that will continue to cause problems if not addressed.

While officials understand that closing the facility in the middle of summer is less than ideal, the safety of facility users is of utmost priority. City staff is collaborating with a roofing vendor to promptly resolve the issues causing the leaks in the locker rooms, playing court areas, and electrical rooms.

The gym will reopen today, Wednesday, July 5, with limited operating hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, please note that in the event of inclement weather in the area, the facility will be closed. Additionally, the roof work may also affect the facility hours, as necessary.
